MEDIA RELEASE

LANDMARK AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN PORTINSCALE

Above Derwent Community Land Trust (ADCLT) officially launches its first development at Pow Wood, Portinscale, Keswick CA12 5FH, on Monday 5 September 2022 at 10am.  The construction of four affordable homes was achieved with funding from Allerdale Borough Council, Homes England, financial support from The Charity Bank, together with the assistance of local advisors and stakeholders.

There will be a ribbon cutting at the development by Joy Pemberton-Smith, Chair of Above Derwent Parish Council.  Reporters and photographers are very welcome to attend.

The four shared ownership family homes at Pow Wood have been built for sale to local people.  The pair of semi-detached homes each have three bedrooms, a garden and two designated parking spaces.  Construction of the Pow Wood development was carried out by W R Richardson of Whitehaven.

With increasing numbers of second homes and holiday lets in the area, together with the high price of property, there is an urgent need for affordable housing to enable young people to get onto the housing ladder. As a result, ADCLT was established to address this in Braithwaite, Portinscale, Thornthwaite and Newlands Valley.

Don Thoburn, Chair of ADCLT said, ‘We are delighted to launch the Pow Wood development, and hope it will be first of many affordable housing schemes we can progress in the area. Our thanks go to Homes England, Allerdale Borough Council and our many stakeholders and partners for their support during the development which was made even more difficult than anticipated due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the current shortages of construction materials. I would also like to thank the directors of ADCLT, who are all volunteers and have given their time generously to turn the idea of Pow Wood into reality.’
